Rivers’ New Political Alliance: A Turning Point or a Temporary Truce?

Politics in Rivers State has entered a new phase. After months of intense rivalry, shifting loyalties and political uncertainty, recent developments suggest that some of the state’s most influential actors are now moving towards a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The emergence and growing influence of the Rainbow Coalition have become the biggest talking point in the state’s political landscape, raising questions about what this realignment means for governance, democracy and the future of Rivers politics.

The latest turning point came when Governor Siminalayi Fubara publicly declared his support for the Rainbow Coalition led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The governor also endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and backed Kingsley Chinda’s governorship ambition, describing the move as part of efforts to sustain peace and move the state beyond its prolonged political crisis.

For many, the significance of this development extends beyond party politics. Rivers State has spent much of the last few years navigating political instability that often overshadowed governance and development.

Court battles, legislative disputes and power struggles dominated public attention, creating uncertainty for investors and leaving many residents hoping for an end to the conflict. The apparent reconciliation between previously opposing camps therefore signals a major shift in the state’s political direction.

Yet, political unity alone is not enough. While alliances may reduce tensions among political leaders, the real measure of success will be whether this newfound cooperation translates into better governance, improved infrastructure, job creation, quality healthcare, education and stronger security.

Rivers people are more interested in visible development than political agreements that exist only during election seasons.

The Rainbow Coalition itself presents an unusual political arrangement, bringing together politicians from different parties under a common objective. Its leaders insist the coalition will collectively determine candidates and work towards maintaining political stability in the state ahead of 2027. Whether this model strengthens democracy or limits political competition remains a subject of public debate.

The recent political truce offers an opportunity to replace years of division with collaboration. However, history has shown that alliances are only meaningful when they produce tangible benefits for the people.

If the state’s leaders can transform this period of reconciliation into sustained development, Rivers may finally begin a new chapter where politics serves as a tool for progress rather than prolonged confrontation.
